6 Spring Wardrobe Essentials You Must Have in Your Closet

by | 04.25.23 | Fashion

Spring is one of my favorite months for fashion. The weather changes dramatically throughout the season, which means tons of layering pieces and clothing options for both warmer and colder weather.

Spring also is a time for wearing lighter colors and brighter colors. Even for someone who wears mostly neutrals (like me), I add in a little pop of color or print here and there in the spring to keep it interesting.

Whether you choose neutrals or bold colors for your wardrobe, there are a few items that I highly recommend everyone has in their closet for the spring. Here are the six spring wardrobe essentials.

Spring Wardrobe Essential #1: The Trench Coat

The classic trench is the number one item every woman should own in their closet. I recommend the traditional neutral color because it is versatile and can be worn with anything. Some trench coats even come with a removable lining so that you can wear them throughout the whole season. Simply remove the lining as the weeks start getting warmer.

There are many options for trench coats out there at various price points. I highly recommend the one I purchased from Brooks Brothers. It is the Cotton Trench Coat in khaki. It has a zip-out lining and a water-repellent finish.

If you are looking for less expensive options, check out these ones from J. Crew, Sam Edelman, and Amazon.

Of course, if you are looking for the creme de law creme of trench coats, the Waterloo Heritage Trench Coat by Burberry is it. This one is definitely on my wish list.

Spring Wardrobe Essential #2: Wide Leg Jeans

We’ve come a long way from skinny jeans over the past few years. Wide leg jeans are very in style this year. And the wider the pant leg, the better. Wide leg jeans are great because of the more relaxed and comfortable fit. Plus, if you put on a few pounds, it’s harder to notice.

I highly recommend investing in a pair (or two) of wide leg denim jeans this spring. This style is easy to dress up or down.

For a casual look, try styling them with white sneakers.

Wear them with heeled sandals and a stylish jacket for a more dressy look.

Spring Wardrobe Essential #3: Wide Leg Trousers

Keeping true to the wide leg theme, I recommend including a pair of wide leg trousers in your spring wardrobe this year. Trousers are a versatile style of pants. They are great for dressing up for the office or business meetings. Try styling them with a jacket and heeled sandals or a belt.

Spring Wardrobe Essential #4: Lightweight Sweater

Layers are the most important consideration when selecting your spring wardrobe. As the months fluctuate from cold to warm, and the days have varied temperatures throughout, it’s important to have options.

A lightweight sweater is a great layering piece because it can be worn with casual denim or with a dress or skirt. Opting for a neutral sweater will go even further, as it will match almost any outfit you put together.

This one from Loft is the perfect weight and light cream color for spring.

Spring Wardrobe Essential #5: Neutral Blazer

One of the simplest ways to elevate any outfit is to add a blazer. For spring, I like to go with a neutral blazer to lighten up my wardrobe. This one from Theory Outlet is beautiful. I like the colorless look and the longer length of the blazer. The cut and style make you look slimmer and taller. (Pictured here in “Wheat.”)

Spring Wardrobe Essential #6: Classic Loafers

I couldn’t recommend spring wardrobe essentials without including a pair of shoes. And nothing beats a comfortable chic classic loafer. Loafers are great for styling office outfits or street-style outfits.

For a stylish and affordable loafer, check out these ones by Sam Edelman. You can get them on Amazon. They resemble the Gucci loafer very closely but are a fraction of the price.

The point of this post is not to suggest that you need to purchase these exact pieces. This article is to guide you in cultivating your own spring wardrobe. Check to see what you already own in your closet that could work. But if you are in the market for any of these spring wardrobe essentials, I own and recommend everything imaged in this post.
