The 2023 Spring Capsule Wardrobe
Spring is in the air. This means warmer weather, longer days, and time to create your spring capsule wardrobe. A capsule wardrobe is a thoughtfully curated collection of clothing that you can mix and match to create a variety of outfits that you love and feel confident wearing.
Creating a capsule wardrobe for each season has so many benefits. Saving time and money are just a couple of those perks. Another great thing about a capsule wardrobe is it gives you a chance to explore your personal style and create a wardrobe that is intentional and sustainable.
What to Include in a Spring Capsule Wardrobe
A seasonal capsule wardrobe should contain 20-35 pieces of clothing and create 90-100 outfits. The number of items you include may vary depending on how much color or how many prints or patterns you include. It also may depend on the weather and your overall style preferences.
I do not include accessories (jewelry, handbags, scarves, hats, etc) in my capsule wardrobes. I like to be able to mix and match any accessories as I see fit for each outfit. If you opt to include them, you may have more than 20-35 pieces in your spring capsule wardrobe.
What to Consider in Creating a Spring Capsule Wardrobe
First, consider what the weather is like in spring where you live. Since spring is a transitional season (going from cold to warm temperatures), the weather can vary widely depending on where you live. Are you in a region where the spring months tend to stay cold (and may even experience snow)? Or do you live somewhere where the weather warms up quickly? Does it rain a lot?
If you live in colder climates, you’ll want to include more long pants and outerwear layers. If you live in warmer climates, consider more options for shorts or light sweaters and cardigans.
I tend to include a larger variety of shoes in the spring capsule wardrobe because the weather can change dramatically. Having more options for sneakers, boots, sandals, or flats helps to tailor the outfits for the different types of weather.
Second, consider your lifestyle. What kind of activities do you do? How do you spend your time in the spring? Do you have any specific occasions coming up that you need to plan an outfit for? Answer these questions to determine the types of clothing that best suit your lifestyle.
Third, consider your preferences. If you like to dress up, include more dressy options in your capsule wardrobe. If you prefer the athleisure look, include more clothing options that suit that style.
I recommend having at least one or two outfits that are more dressy so that you have options for dinners, dates, or events. Of course you can always purchase a separate outfit for a specific event. You aren’t limited exclusively to your capsule wardrobe. But some of the great benefits of creating and utilizing a capsule wardrobe is so that you can spend less money on clothing and can rewear the pieces you buy for a more sustainable wardrobe.
The most important thing in selecting items for your spring capsule wardrobe is to choose clothing that you will feel comfortable and confident wearing. These will be pieces that you rotate through and wear throughout the season, so it’s important that you like them and want to wear them.
If you’re not sure where to start with building a spring capsule wardrobe, you can look to mine as an example. I created a 2023 spring capsule wardrobe with a neutral color pallet, mixing casual and business options. I tend to prefer mostly-neutral clothing when creating a capsule wardrobe. This makes mixing and matching the different pieces a whole lot easier. Plus neutrals tend to look chic and classy.
This information is meant to serve as a guide so that you can easily create your own neutral, everyday-style spring capsule wardrobe this year. In this post, I give you ideas on the types of clothing to include for spring, as well as some suggestions on staple and versatile pieces.
Let’s drive in.
The 2023 Spring Capsule Wardrobe
A seasonal capsule wardrobe should provide you with about 90-100 outfits. For this year’s spring capsule wardrobe, I included 28 pieces of clothing and shoes. The items are a mix of tops, bottoms, outerwear/layers, and a one-piece. My capsule wardrobe is based in neutral tones and captures a sophisticated but casual aesthetic to easily create everyday outfits.
- Bottoms: 6
- Tops: 9
- Outerwear/layers: 5
- One-piece: 1
- Shoes: 7 pairs
I included six bottoms in my spring capsule wardrobe this year, including a mix of denim, slacks, and a skirt. Each item is linked below.
Wide leg pants are in style this year, so I made sure to include a wide leg pair of blue jeans. I also included a tapered pair of blue jeans for a contrasted look. Both options are a light shade of blue. I tend to prefer lighter-colored denim for the spring and summer months.
Spring is the time to start wearing lighter colors, so I also included a light beige pair of denim. Some years I select a winter white pair of pants for my spring capsule wardrobe, but I felt like mixing it up with a light beige pair. My spring capsule wardrobe is based in warm neutrals this year, so the beige blended better than bright white with this particular capsule.
To add some more business/office-style options, I included a pair of tapered black slacks and a pair of tapered neutral slacks. I really like the tapered style for spring because it goes well with ballet flats, loafers, mules, boots, or heels. Also, if you live in an area that gets a lot of rain in the spring, the bottoms of your pants legs don’t get soaked with the tapered style.
I added a leopard midi skirt for some print and a dressier option. I already owned this skirt, and it is one of my favorites to wear. So it was a no-brainer to include in the spring capsule wardrobe. (You will probably see this again in future capsule wardrobes.)
I included nine tops in my spring capsule wardrobe this year, including basic staples, a little color, and some stripes. Each item is linked below. (I linked a similar item where the exact one was no longer available.)
I always include a few black, white, or neutral tank tops and t-shirts in any capsule wardrobe. They are a staple and especially important as layering options in spring. This year I included a neutral tank top, a white t-shirt, and a black t-shirt. Each of these items were something I already owned, so neither of the t-shirts are still available for purchase.
A chambray top is always a popular favorite in spring capsule wardrobes. It’s neutral but adds a pop of color. I purchased a new one this year from Loft. The fabric is incredibly soft, and I like the rolled short-sleeved look. Loft also has long-sleeved chambray options.
I included mostly short-sleeved tops in my spring capsule wardrobe because the weather in Palm Springs gets very warm very quickly. If you live in a colder climate, consider a long-sleeved striped blouse, long-sleeved chambray, or long-sleeved light sweater.
Outerwear & Layers
I included five outerwear/layering pieces in my spring capsule wardrobe this year, including casual, dressy, and classic options. Each item is linked below. (I linked a similar item where the exact one was no longer available.)
Layers are so important for spring due to the drastic changes in temperatures between March and June. If you live in colder climates, you may consider having more than five layers or heavier layers in your spring capsule wardrobe.
The trench coat is probably one of the most classic pieces to include in a spring capsule wardrobe (any my personal favorite option for outerwear). It is neutral, timeless, and can go with many outfits. Trench coats effortlessly elevate your style with their chic and sophisticated look.
I tend to include one or two one-piece items in my seasonal capsule wardrobes. This year I chose a jumpsuit that I already owned. I linked a similar option here.
Again, having a larger variety of shoe options is so important for spring due to the dramatic changes in weather between March and June. This year I selected seven pairs of shoes for the spring capsule wardrobe. They are a variety of neutral colors and a mix of casual/dressy and heels/flats.
Remember to start with what you already own and determine how to incorporate those shoes into your spring capsule wardrobe.
Accessorizing Your Spring Capsule Wardrobe
For the finishing touches on your capsule wardrobe, pick out some accessories to elevate your outfits. These can be belts, hats, scarves, sunglasses, jewelry, handbags. Decide whether you want to limit accessories and include them as part of your capsule wardrobe.
I don’t usually include specific pieces of jewelry, handbags, or other accessories as part of my seasonal capsule wardrobes. I mix and match as I see fit. If you are going to limit jewelry, stick to either gold-toned pieces or silver-toned pieces. By sticking to a few key pieces that are all the same tone, it will be easier to mix and match the jewelry for each outfit. If you’re going to limit handbags, I recommend selecting one black bag and one neutral-toned bag.
Final Thoughts on the 2023 Spring Capsule Wardrobe
When creating your own spring capsule wardrobe, always start with what you already own. A capsule wardrobe is designed to save you money. You don’t need to start fresh from scratch each season. Consider which pieces of clothing are your favorite and incorporate those. Search Pinterest boards for additional ideas. And only purchase items that you feel would be versatile and that you feel confident wearing.
